Why Soap Fans Are So Loyal

May 6, 2015 By Tessa McKenzie

Those who are not soap opera fans often wonder: why are so many people so dedicated to their soaps and the characters who populate their soaps? Why do soap fans get so worked about their soaps, particularly their cancellations? What do soaps bring to our lives? Who are soaps fans loyal to—the networks/advertisers or their soaps. We often find it difficult to find replacements for the products advertise on our soaps. And we certainly can’t simply find another show to replace our soaps, which mean so much to us. If a network/advertiser treats our soaps well, we will be loyal to their products, as know how the system works—you scratch our backs, we scratch yours. And vice versa: if networks/advertisers treat our soaps poorly (especially by cancelling them, as difficult as it may be, we will find a replacement product).

FBRC-1

Soap characters are our extended family. To some they are the only family they have. We live with them and through their ups and downs often for decades at a time. Sometime we can’t count on a lot of other things, but for many of us, over the course of most of our lives we could count on our soap families’ being there at the same time, in the same place 5-days-a-week. We have formed deep bonds with our soap families.  These bonds are so deep that we celebrate, mourn, laugh, and cry with them, as do audiences the world over. When the stresses we experience become too much to bear, we can count on our soaps and their characters, even the ones we dislike! Soaps are our light in the storm through many of our darkest hours.

One example of what soaps bring to our lives is life-saving information. Many of us got tested for HIV when we saw AIDS slowly steal Stone Cates’ life away on General Hospital. Others made sure to get checked out for prostate cancer when Michael Baldwin was diagnosed with it on The Young and the Restless, and likewise as we watched Monica Quatermaine struggle with her breast cancer on General Hospital. We knew the healing power of bonding with others who had shared a similar trauma when Erica Kane opened up about her experience with rape on All My Children. Teenagers remembered never to give in to bullies when Shane Marasco attempted suicide because of a bully’s actions on One Life to Live. We knew some of the pain of being homeless thanks to Stephanie Forrester’s story on The Bold and the Beautiful. And more recently on The Bold and the Beautiful, fans met a transgendered woman, Maya Avant, and began to understand her struggle, and will more so as her story continues. Countless other examples exist of our being aided and supported through our life journeys by soap characters and their own.

The way is gonna beAnd those bonds are part of the reason we do not take lightly the cancellation of our soaps.
ABC/Disney, we gave you our loyalty for decades as we watched All My Children, One Life to Live, and General Hospital and SOAPnet. You took this loyalty for granted and canceled the former two soaps. We will keep up our boycotts of you, your products, and your advertisers until you restore All My Children and One Life to Live to your daytime lineup and SOAPnet to cable. Once you do that, you will have our valuable loyalty once again.

Guiding light logoCBS/Proctor & Gamble, for years we welcomed your products into our homes because we knew that doing so helped keep our soaps on the air. You betrayed us by canceling Guiding Light and As the World Turns. Now we buy your competitors’ products and will continue to do so, until you reverse “The Guiding Light Massacre” and bring the aforementioned soaps back to your daytime lineup.

santa barbaraNBC/Universal: because you have let Days of Our Lives remain on your programming schedule and because you did the right thing by selling the rights to Passions to DirecTV, we give you break. However, we haven’t forgotten how you canceled Another World and Santa Barbara—and we want them back. Be the first one to bring back your soaps, and you will be soaps fans’ number one network for years to come.
Calling all Dallas fansTNT, we thank for having brought back Dallas. Time Warner,  parent company to TNT, we thank you for having picked up Dallas. As soon you close the deal to bring Dallas home to CBS, you will create loyal customers of your film for life we promise you this. While we boycott Disney films, we will happily go to see ones funded by Warner Brothers, which you also own.

To reiterate, to the networks who carry/carried our soaps, we say: when you respect our soap family and keep our shows on the air, we will be loyal viewers and consumers of products advertised during our shows. But when you cancel our shows without a thought to how much we care for our soaps and soap families, without telling us that our soaps are in trouble and you need our help to make them more profitable, we will exercise our power to boycott you and your sponsors. We will make you pay, literally, until you bring our shows and families back.

A group of SOS campaigns have created a formal petition that will be launched Friday. We’ll let you know where! And, soap fans, when you think of all soaps have meant to you over the years, you will sign it.

And Remember: Stay Soapy,

Your blog Editor-in-Chief

Dallas: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

March 24, 2015 By Tessa McKenzie

Dallas globeHey, Soap/LTAS Fans! We would like to introduce our “Dallas Trilogy” posts. First this post, based on guest blogger tvblogger1127’s assertion that “TNT set “Dallas” up to fail almost right out of the gate.” (Next up will be “For The Love of Dallas” fan blog sharing what “Dallas” has meant to her). Finally, we want to demonstrate that not only the United States and Canada, but the 170 countries it was originally broadcast in, are clamoring to get back their beloved “Dallas.” In her post, tvblogger1127 said, “I think the way TNT aired the series was a mistake. They set it up to fail almost right out of the gate.” We agree, and we have some thoughts about what happened between their reboot of Dallas and its cancellation two seasons later that gradually set it up to fail.

Remember this is theorizing, not something we can give you facts on yet. We think TNT was approached to do a Dallas reboot. They must have thought, “It was a giant phenomenon, and the fans are still around, so why not!”

So season one aired, and the ratings were sky-high. TNT didn’t foresee that “Dallas” would be huge in terms of fan reception let alone the international fans desire for its still existing after all these years. But a small cable station like TNT didn’t have the financial means to broadcast it in 100 countries or promote it in the same ways that the big 3 networks might have. However Executive producer and writer Cynthia Cidre did an admirable job getting old and young viewers to watch a reboot of 20-year-old show.

Then Larry Hagman, the iconic JR, passed away, and many fans at first tuned out. But he ratings for JR’s funeral went sky-high again, then with the story line “JR Master Piece” the story line the viewers stay tuned.

TNT decided that because the fan base certainly still existed and they didn’t have the resources or connections to make a reboot work, they would sell the rights to Warner Brothers.

tvblogger1127, “Dallas” fan and LTAS guest blogger were devastated by the news that no one wanted to pick up the show.

TNT and other smaller networks want to resurrect “Dallas,” but they also understand they did not have the finances to do a media blitz as CBS might do or to see to the international airing of “Dallas” in hundreds of countries worldwide.

As, tvblogger1127said in her earlier LTAS guest bog, “Many fans were left with that sinking feeling of, ‘What happens next?’ There was no closure, no warning”

TNT provided no closure when it cancelled the recent “Dallas” reboot, because they didn’t want it cancelled. And so they sold the rights to Warner Brothers, a corporation that has the means to bring “Dallas” back the way it was in its 1980’s heyday and to resurrect it in the hundreds of countries worldwide who love it.

My dear “Dallas,” fans, we at LTAS have so much admiration for you and look up to you for your undying loyalty to ”Dallas,” and your unwavering dedication to see it resurrected a third time in all the glory and with all soap fabulousness it once deserves. You have proven you can do it, and you will, we are sure of it. Now we ask Warner Brothers to return “Dallas” to its original home. And we ask CBS to show it to its huge international audience. And getting Warner Brothers and CBS to do these things will require the kind of perseverance and passion you have always shown to “Dallas.”

We, at LTAS, thank TNT for their Dallas reboot, for not writing down “Dallas” the way P&G did “Guiding Light” making it end in ignominy and disrepute. Nor did TNT play games or refuse to return “Dallas” Warner Brothers, as ABC did with their soaps AMC and OLTL and refused to return the rights to those soaps to their creator and long-time head writer, Agnes Nixon.

One blunder on TNT’s part was to make was to fail to respect fans with a press conference or press release. The Presidents’ office does this, and surely TNT doesn’t think it doesn’t owe its fans the same way the United State President owes his people. Just as the White House answers to its people, so does a networks must answers is viewers.

So now “Dallas” fans, let’s tell Warner Brother we want “Dallas” returned to it’s original home and time slot on CBS. Let them know through e-mails, calls, snail mail, comments on their website, Tweets, Facebook posts, any way you can—make them smell the money they want!—that you would support another “Dallas” reboot, one that shows evidence of the huge domestic and international fan bases.

And ABC fans keep up the ABC/Disney boycott until ABC returns “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” back to their original time slots.

And CBS fans keep boycotting Proctor & Gamble products to show we are not giving up until they return our cancelled CBS daytime soaps.

And soap/LTAS fans: don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter (top right-hand corner of any page), comment, discuss, let us and each other know your thoughts!

As always, remember to Stay Soapy!

The Bold and Beautiful: Cliffhanger Friday 03/20/15

March 20, 2015 By Tessa McKenzie

bb cf 031315Well, “Bold and Beautiful” fans, B&B’s cliffhanger happened on Wednesday, as episodes will not be aired Thursday and Friday due to the NCAA Basketball March Madness. So Let’s Talk About Soaps.

The “big Maya secret” was revealed on Wednesday and it was a doozie. Nicole proudly announced to Maya that she had done her research and was not her sister Maya at all, but her brother Myron. Now let’s examine the problem with this storyline.

  1. Maya was brought onto Bold and Beautiful as an ex-con looking for her daughter. Dayzee had Maya sign papers giving the baby up for adoption when Maya was about to be sentenced to ten years in prison. Dayzee later informed Maya that her daughter and the adoptive parents were killed in a car accident.
  2. When Maya was dating Rick, $Bill had her thoroughly investigated to keep her away from Caroline’s boyfriend. As we all know Caroline is $Bill’s niece. Well anywhoooo, $Bill confronted Maya to blackmail her with her jail time information. Maya shared with $Bill that she was pregnant and could not leave the criminal baby daddy because she did not have any money and didn’t know anyone in the area to seek help from. $Bill agreed with this information.
  3. We know $Bill as the tycoon, he would have readily used the information about Maya being born a male. He would have called her out on that even before she said that she was pregnant. Science has advanced in many ways; however, it has not advance to the point where a male can become pregnant. $Bill is nothing but complete when gathering dirt on someone to blackmail them, just consider when he got Deacon out of jail to stop LOPE’s wedding. He had the most sensitive information on the warden.
  4. Additionally, there are videos of Maya telling $Bill about being pregnant and carrying the baby on numerous fan pages since this “revelation” happened.
  5. Maya has always said that her family was not rich, so how did she pay for this surgery? It takes years of therapy and hormone therapy before gender reassignment surgery can be performed. Maya went to jail young, so when did this happen?

While the “big secret” took everyone by surprise, it left viewers in amazement that the history of Maya is being whitewashed to make this storyline happen. Viewers are not buying it, at least not long-time viewers. Now there are plenty of those that strongly dislike Maya and want her to get what’s coming to her and Rick. They are not on board with this because the Maya’s history was already established.

If “Bold and Beautiful” wanted to address the social issue of gender identity, then bringing in a totally new character would work better. Not one that has already been introduced. All of the current characters have had their history established. Since the character Hope is away and has suffered such a loss and tragedy, maybe Bell could reintroduce her as discovering that she has secretly struggled with her identity and is really transgender. They could take her through the entire process to encourage discussion and evolve the storyline properly and respectfully.

So, what do you think? Is Nicole right about Maya? Will Bell rewrite history? Can the return of Hope as a transgender be a possibility? Or should a totally new character be brought in to tell this story?

The Bold and Beautiful: Cliffhanger Friday 03/13/15

March 14, 2015 By Tessa McKenzie

Wellbb 03 06 15, Bold and Beautiful fans, I must say that I was sorely disappointed in our Cliffhanger Friday this week. I thought for sure that we were going to find out the “Big, Dirty secret.” Oh well, Let’s Talk About Soaps.

Side note here: I think the majority of B&B fans enjoyed Thursday when Ivy told Maya that if she and Rick were just having fun with Ivy and Aly for her to massage her feet as Rick told Aly to do. Well, Maya didn’t think it was funny then. Loving it.

As usual, Eric is blinded by Rick and, frankly, it’s getting real old. All Eric can talk about are the numbers and like Ridge told him, Rick didn’t do it by himself. It was CaRidge’s designs and all of the employees that made it happen. Needless to say, Ridge was talking to a brick wall.

I think it’s time for Ridge, Caroline, Ivy, Aly, Oliver, and Carter to bail ship and leave Rick and Maya to run Forrester. I was a hold out on this idea because Ridge and his children own 50% of the company. However, I am sick of RAYA and their antics.

Today Rick and Caroline‘s marriage ended. As we all know Linsey Godfrey, aka Caroline, was in an accident and was not filming at that time. We are ultra happy to report that Linsey is doing well and has returned to work. Carter stood in proxy for Caroline and had a deep conversation with Rick about whether this is what he wanted. Rick reminisced about their marriage as if he regretted the divorce. I for one DO NOT WANT Rick and Caroline back together again. Rick treated Caroline like a trick, some side chick. Plus, I am loving CaRidge! Their chemistry is off the charts. So leave RAYA together, but make them have a hard fall and pay for all the dirty deeds that they have done.

Rick asked Maya‘s sister, Nicole, to stay with them and even had Aly FORRESTER, his cousin, give up her bedroom for her. Now this is a mansion, there are plenty of rooms, so Nicole could have stayed in another one of them.

Maya was reluctant to have Nicole stay with them. I have to agree with Maya here. Many fans are rooting for Nicole because they want to see her bring Maya down with some “Big Secret.” However, I see Nicole as just a true gold digger. Why, you ask? Well, Nicole feels entitled to living at the Forrester’s mansion and having everything that Maya has, although, she’s never done ANYTHING other than be Maya’s sister. For those that follow the spoilers, you will see the true gold digging Nicole surface soon. I don’t like people riding on the backs of others and feel entitled because of them. So, NO, I’m NOT a Nicole fan.

The Cliffhanger moment, if you want to call it that, was Nicole’s telling Maya that she knows her secret. However, we didn’t find out what it was, so… zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. BORING!!!!!

What is Maya’s secret? Will Eric FINALLY listen to someone about Rick? Do you want CRICK or CaRidge?

The Bold and Beautiful: Cliffhanger Friday 02/27/15

February 28, 2015 By Tessa McKenzie

bb 022715Ahhh a day in the life at The Bold and The Beautiful. I must say I’m loving the many storylines and the inclusion of ALL actors and actresses instead of being solely focused on one or two. It has become more #BoldandBalanced.

As usual The Bold and Beautiful didn’t disappoint this Friday and left us hanging over the cliff wanting more. So, Let’s Talk About Soaps.

Honeymooners BATIE are all lovey dovey. There’s a few issues I have with them, Katie gave $Bill a new sword necklace. $Bill had reservations about taking off his sword necklace and as a matter of fact he didn’t, Katie did. $Bill told Katie that the necklace represented everything that he is and his accomplishments in life. Katie took the necklace off because the new one is a symbol of their new life going forward.

Some boards are abuzz with fans saying that Katie replacing $Bill’s sword necklace just shows her insecurities and her desire to control $Bill. We will see.

BATIE are on their honeymoon and what I want to know is why is so much of Katie’s conversation about Brooke? That’s total madness especially since Brooke was going to marry $Bill and in essence got him back partially due to being a rebound. Yes, I know Katie might be concerned for Brooke getting tipsey; but dang girl you are on your honeymoon. Regardless of the number of times that $Bill told her that Brooke is alright and he’s trying to get back to business, gluten for punishment Katie continues to talk about Brooke. They make love, she talks about Brooke; they are in the bed in an intimate moment, she talks about Brooke; this idiot actually was going to call Brooke. Omgoodness, girl give it up. Brooke is a grown woman and she wasn’t talking about you when she was riding your stallion $Bill like she was an equestrian jockey.

Also, $Bill why did you take the cheap way out with Katie by taking her to Big Bear for the honeymoon? You took Brooke to Dubai to marry her. Is it because Ridge put a “string on it?” ROTFL

Wyatt is at Quinn’s expressing his concern about QEACON’s relationship and basically Deacon as a whole. Quinn loves and trust Deacon because he was there for her when she needed him; when everyone else turned their back on her. Wyatt wants to know where Deacon is and Quinn tells him that he went out to get takeout dinner. Unbeknownst to them, Deacon ran into Brooke at the restaurant and found her tore up from the floor up. Brooke has been hitting the sauce and I don’t mean apple, pretty hard.

Deacon takes Brooke home to try to help her sober up. Ok, you must question motives right here. Yes, BREACON has a child together; but how that child was conceived is scandalous as Deacon was married to Brooke’s daughter Bridget. Plus, before Brooke left for International, Deacon had asked Brooke to marry him. Brooke had a driver and told him so, oh well moving forward.

When Deacon does manage to get her to the house all Brooke wants to do is drink and party. She wants Deacon to be her drinking buddy. When Deacon refuses and tells her that he is committed to Quinn and tries to get her to go upstairs and sober up. Once Brooke is upstairs, Deacon should exit stage right; however, he stays. Brooke comes back downstairs in a bathing suit with her sarong wrapped around her. Like, didn’t we see the “let’s go for a swim trick” last week with STEAM? Point here is that although Brooke looked good in the swimsuit, she couldn’t pull it off like Steffy did AND she didn’t work her sarong like Steffy. When Steffy was ready for action, she whipped that sarong off like a matador ready for her bull, Liam, to charge.

Although Deacon tried to resist, he found himself weak to Logan and planted a big kiss on Brooke. Well as we know, Brooke is without a man and at this point, any man will do. When he apologized, she said, “it’s not like you never kissed me before.” She wanted to “party.” Deacon realizing that he was about to get into some real trouble left.

Quinn and Wyatt was still talking about Deacon when he arrived at the house with the food. Side note here, he paid cash for his and Brooke’s tab, but Deacon doesn’t have a job, so actually he paid for it with Quinn‘s money, ROTFL he better hope that Quinn doesn’t find out this tidbit of information.

Quinn and Wyatt give Deacon the third degree about where he’s been. He finally fesses up that when he went to the restaurant to pick up the food he found Brooke drunk and took her home. Omgoodness, MISTAKE, Wyatt and Quinn wanted to know if he took Brooke all the way back to the house, did he take her in the house, and then Wyatt wanted to know if he took her “in the bed?” LOL, Deacon wanted to know what that was suppose to mean. Wyatt said, “well you had to do something with her.” When Deacon told him she had to sober up, Wyatt questioned if he made her a “big strong pot of coffee.” ROTFL, it was getting too intense for Deacon and he wanted Wyatt to leave.

Then Deacon was bounced over to Quinn for questioning. She wanted to know what Deacon did to sober Brooke up, lol. Deacon said that Brooke wanted to go swimming, but obviously they didn’t. Quinn again asked, “what did you do?” Deacon said that he had to “talk her down.” Ball back to Wyatt, “from what?” Ooooo, the then the glass ball broke, Deacon said, “she wanted to party and she was tracing around in that swimsuit.” Booyah, there it is….. they rode him up and down, it got too hot in there for him and he needed to excuse himself before the flames of Hades continued to burn him. ROTFL

As you know Quinn wasn’t having it and left to go to Brooke‘s house. Deacon comes back into the room and inquires where Quinn is. Wyatt says out. Thick headed Deacon asked “where?” Wyatt standing the cool, calm, and collected; folded his hands in front of him and answered his question with THE question, “where do you think Deacon?” Deacon just shakes his head and rolls his eyes in disbelief.

Deacon calls and texts Quinn; but we all know that Quinn is on a mission and is not about to answer. Deacon believes that Wyatt wants Quinn to go to Brooke‘s and set her straight, but Wyatt quickly clears it up and let him know that he wants Deacon out of Quinn‘s life. Deacon knows he’s the best thing that every happened to Quinn. Wyatt goes back to interrogating Deacon and wanted to know what “REALLY” happened, Wyatt believes something else happened that Deacon didn’t share with them.

Now for the Cliffhanger Moment, one I must admit that I enjoyed immensely. Brooke is chillin’ on the couch with her vodka, when ding dong, the doorbell rings.  Brooke opens the door and tells Quinn that she looks like she could use a drink. Quinn whips back “looks like you had enough for the both of us.”

Brooke wants Quinn to leave, but it’s not happening. Quinn begins her verbal sparing with Brooke. Quinn tells Brooke that she is drunk and pathetic and he doesn’t want anything to do with her. Chug-A-Lug Brooke, questions who? Ridge, Bill, Eric… Quinn is not ready for games and tells her not to play dumb with her, she knows who. Brooke tells Quinn to leave. Then my FAVORITE moment…..

Quinn frowns, rares back and brings “The Slap” around for Brooke. ROTFL, Brooke goes sailing in the air and lands on the ground looking dazed and confused. Quinn brazenly stands over Brooke and tells her “you stay away from him, you stay away from Deacon, do you hear me?” Brooke looks at her in shock.

That was classified as “ONE OF THE BEST SLAPS” in B&B history. Stephanie was the Queen of Slaps, but NEVER, EVER, did she send anyone airborne with her slap.

What will happen next? We ALL know Qrazy Quinn and what she’s capable of and now Brooke is on her radar. Will Quinn make Brooke’s life a living Hades? Exactly what is Quinn going to do to Brooke?

Days of Our Lives, Cliffhanger Friday 02/27/15

February 27, 2015 By Tessa McKenzie

days pic 022715

At Nicole’s office:

Nicole:You wanted to see me, Robert?

Robert: Sit down please, Nicole.

Nicole: Did I do something wrong…again?

Robert:  Sort of.

Nicole:What did I do?

Robert: Nicole, when accessing the Dark Web don’t use the offices IP Address. You know what could happen if whatever you’re doing gets back here…

Nicole: Sorry.

Robert: Please be careful, Nicole, not only are you my friend, but you’re my best and favorite reporter, I don’t want to lose you.

Nicole: I will. I promise.

Robert: Thank you. Now what have you got for me?

This week in Salem:

Serena was furious with Eric for giving away the elephant, demanding that he get it back.

Paul’s Mother came to Salem too and was freaked out when she saw Marlena.

It’s officially over for Chad and Jordan. Kate‘s meddling and Ben’s pending jail time sealed their fate, Chad reached out to Stefano to deal with Kate.

What do you think Stefano and Chad will come up with, and will it lead to the EJ/Clyde-Miguel murder revelation?

Abigail went to talk to Chad about Ben, even though she was already aware that it was out of Chad’s hands…Abigail assumed that Chad was going to give her an “indecent proposal” but that was not the case…after reporting back to Clyde and Ben, Abigail may change tactics and try to seduce chad anyway.

Should she try to? And would she succeed if she did?

Melanie made a deal with Nicole: “Help me dig up dirt on some doctor and Theresa and I’ll would work things over with Daniel on Nicole’s behalf.”

Nicole agreed.

Do you think that Melanie should respect Theresa’s wish and stay out of everything?

To help Page get over him, JJ enlisted help from an old friend: “Roxanne.” Jennifer continues to freak out because she can’t control his life. Eve has obviously developed feelings for JJ, as she was clearly jealous of Roxanne, even though coming up with a plan to end Page’s curiosity and her relationship with JJ was her idea.

What are your thoughts on this weeks happenings?

Welcome to the Chicken Coop, Mr Wolf

February 2, 2015 By Tessa McKenzie

Chucky 2Politics. The word is so charged and laden with emotional baggage that many people wisely leave the room at its mere utterance. Give it a try, and if you’re anything like most people, the images it conjures in your mind are probably fairly predictable (and not at all unreasonable): Angry people yelling at each other, often-rigged popularity contests, and above all, disingenuous, unscrupulous individuals more concerned with attaining positions of power than with faithfully carrying out the responsibilities that are supposed to come with it.

It may surprise you to hear, then, that – of all things – the inner workings of soap operas are surprisingly similar to this latter aspect of politics. All too often, favors and status from personal friends result in the appointing of someone to a role of some stewardship over a soap that the named person in no way deserves. Today we discuss one such example, in the infamous person of Charles Pratt, Jr.

Of course, for soap opera fans, this man needs no introduction. A writer of influence for some time on All My Children, he was commonly ridiculed by viewers, who liked to joke that he “couldn’t write a grocery list”. His style and the content of his stories left it plain that he neither understood the show for which he was writing, nor cared about its integrity. Susan Lucci and Michael E Knight are among the AMC alum known to have criticized Pratt, and even to have approached him with protestations that their characters were being egregiously mishandled, all to no avail. Fed up, fans even launched an online petition, collecting digital signatures to demand that Pratt be removed as a writer.

So naturally, he’s now an Executive Producer on The Young and The Restless.

I’m afraid you read that right. Not only has Pratt never been punished for his careless attitude toward the show he was entrusted to guide and protect, he’s now been rewarded with a promotion. In addition to the fact that this is simply outrageous, it’s also a threat to another beloved soap, and it must be treated as such. This monster, who obviously couldn’t care less about the soul of the shows he works on, must not be allowed to do to Y&R what he did to AMC.

Fans must make their voices heard, speaking clearly and unequivocally their rejection of Charles Pratt, Jr, and be clear that they will not patronize his involvement. It’s his job to protect this show, but we already know he’s not going to do it. And that means it falls to us!

Decoding the Latest Development in the Ever-Tedious PP vs. ABC Lawsuit

December 29, 2014 By Tessa McKenzie

pp abc picHello, Soap Fans! Hope you’re all doing well this Monday! This blog is intended to continue demystifying the lawsuit involving Prospect Park and Disney. Both this blog and the previous one , both of which are interviews—this one being just two quick questions and a link to the legal document Trevor McBain and Karim El Masri alerted us to!—with a legal counsel colleague of ours, Troy Veenstra. We would like to thank Trevor McBain, big soap fan and blogger, and Karim el Masri, also a big soap fan, for making us aware of the legal document that this blog references.

Here is a link to it

Do you know, soap fans, how over this lawsuit your trusted editor and friend, Akbi Khan is? It’s starting to feel like just another way for ABC/Disney to prolong the pain of soap fans like us and you. Am I right?

So we asked our friend and legal counsel, Troy Veenstra , to help us understand the latest legal drama (if only it were as interesting, well-written, touching, etc. as a soap!).

LTAS: What, essentially, is this latest chapter in the increasingly irritating and way-too-long legal battle between ABC and Prospect Park?

TV: Because the Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan is based on PPN winning their lawsuit against ABC, Wilmington Trustee’s say that it is unfounded, unreliable as its using the basis of the payment of the suit to pay their debts, relying on funds that currently are not tangible. Meaning funds that don’t actually exist and will only exist IF PPN wins their lawsuit. (This is kind of like saying; I will pay my bills once I win the lottery.)

Furthermore, because PPN has failed to release or disclose their monthly operating cost to the Bankruptcy court, the trusties want to change the chapter 11 filing to an all-out bankruptcy, chapter seven, liquidating all assets. I have attached a copy of the Bankruptcy Docket for your reader, it includes some information you might find interesting and useful.

Trustee Blasts ‘One Life To Live’ Producer’s Ch. 11 Disclosure

Law360, Wilmington (December 16, 2014, 2:35 PM ET) — A U.S. Trustee on Monday blasted the disclosure statement of bankrupt Prospect Park Networks LLC, the production company that tried to revive soap operas “One Life to Live” and “All My Children” online, saying it outlines a Chapter 11 plan that doesn’t pass muster.

U.S. Trustee Roberta A. DeAngelis argues that PPN’s disclosure statement should be rejected because the plan itself is defective and would only take effect once funds are available to pay administrative and priority tax claims, a situation that seemingly depends on the company succeeding in its $95 million lawsuit against the ABC television network.

“The debtor’s disclosure statement should not be approved because the underlying Chapter 11 plan is unconfirmable,” DeAngelis said in an objection filed in Delaware bankruptcy court. “The plan has an indefinite, contingent effective date and appears to hinge on speculative litigation winnings.”

PPN launched a breach-of-contract suit against ABC in California state court in April 2013, alleging the television network sabotaged the online relaunches of “All My Children” and “One Life to Live,” and entered bankruptcy in Delaware this March after its online versions of the soaps failed to generate sufficient revenue.

The Hollywood-based production company unveiled a Chapter 11 plan in August that would create a liquidation trustee to wind down the estate, and filed an updated plan and disclosure statement in October.

DeAngelis contends the proposed plan violates the Bankruptcy Code requirement that administrative and priority tax claims be paid in full soon after confirmation, since holders of such claims would have to wait until PPN has raised sufficient funds, the objection said.

“The effective date can occur only if the debtor accumulates enough money — presumably from the ABC litigation — to pay administrative and priority tax claims in full,” the trustee said. “But that contingency may only come to fruition at an indefinite future date and may not come to fruition at all.”

The disclosure statement touts the ABC litigation as PPN’s most significant asset, but fails to state how much cash the estate has on hand and whether it is sufficient to cover the required claims, according to the objection.

“If the estate does not have enough money to pay administrative and priority claims in full on or around the time of confirmation, then a hearing on the disclosure statement should not go forward,” the trustee said.

Moreover, considering the disclosure statement at this time is inappropriate because PPN has failed to file its required monthly operating reports since July, said DeAngelis, who concluded with a request that the court consider converting the case to Chapter 7.

LTAS: ABC/Disney still own the rights to All My Children, we know this. But do the latest developments have anything to do with or change the fact that ABC/Disney owns the rights to One Life to Live? Will this latest development interfere in any way with ABC/Disney’s ability to reboot the soaps?

TV: No the latest development doesn’t have anything to do with or change the fact that ABC owns the rights to AMC or OLTL or their ability to reboot the soaps?”

Hope that helped! In other LTAS news, we are working on a blog on advertisers/advertising and soaps. Dr. Donald Boudreau’s interview delved into this topic often, but this upcoming blog will be dedicated exclusively to it and will feature the answers of someone who knows that industry.

We would like to thank our friend, Troy Veenstra for his continued help in understanding the lawsuit between Prospect Park and ABC/Disney. Thank you, Troy! Veenstra is also the author of a book titled, “The Murder of Jeffrey Dryden: the Grim Truth Surrounding Male Domestic Abuse,” available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
